Shop History

Galifões Association Republic was founded in 1947. This Republic had an important participation in the 60’s academic crisis. During the 1962 crisis, the President of the General Direction of AAC (Coimbra Academic Association) was Francisco Leal Paiva, who lived at Galifões, and was expelled from all the national schools for a period of 2 years by the University Senate order, as a consequence of the II Students’ National Meeting, in direct disobedience to the National Education Ministry. In the same year, another element from this Republic was arrested by the Political Police (PIDE- International Police and State Defence), Joaquim Loureiro, from who the Republic maintains a letter sent from the prison to the colleagues. Galifões Republic has maintained its activity concerning the preservation of the challenging spirit and the academic traditions, namely with the participation in academic celebrations and by organising activities, as fado de Coimbra festivals, or others.

True replacement communities, alternative households from those left in hometown, the Repúblicas (communal houses for students) are more than just student or university residences, representing the traditional academic life of Coimbra, with all that this entails, from the bohemian life to the ideological aspects.
