It was on October 10, 1911 that Fotografia Roriz opened its doors in the heart of the historic center of Viana do Castelo, on Rua Gago Coutinho.

Shop History

The house founded by Domingos Sousa Roriz was quite innovative at the time, as there were very few establishments in the same field in Viana do Castelo or even throughout Minho.
In the middle of the century, Roriz was already considered one of the best photography houses, widely sought after for services such as weddings, baptisms or traditional family portraits, very popular at the time, especially in families with greater economic power. In 1979, Joaquim Roriz was even awarded the Kodak award for “Best Bridal Photographer of the month”.
What truly distinguishes this activity is the dedication, sensitivity and love for photography that has always characterized the family and which, in a way, are shared with everyone through a glass negative archive with 22 thousand photographs, and on film, in black and white. and in color, which exceeds 160 thousand.
In 2016, the collection of the oldest photography house still in operation in Viana was handed over to the municipality, revealing 105 years of the city’s recent history. More than a century of visual memories that have become, “officially”, local heritage.
