The Shop

Lopo Xavier & Companhia Lda. Is a traditional store of the city of Porto, founded in 1934 dedicated to the resale of products of haberdashery, yarn and fabrics.
The store maintained all its traces and tradition and remained in the family of partner Bernardino Ribeiro da Silva, through his daughters, Ana Maria Alonso da Silva Pinto de Oliveira and Maria João Alonso da Silva.
Inside the shop, all the furniture dates back to 1947, when the last major remodeling of the store was carried out by the Architect Avelino Santos, from the ARS Arquitectos Architecture Office, inside the store there are two beautiful sculptures by the sculptor Henrique Moreira, allusive to the branch of business of the store.

Shop History

The articles marketed have always been linked to wool, fabrics, embroidery and all accessories, as well as haberdashery.
Lopo Xavier’s flagship yarns, its three own brands, come from the historical circumstances of the time: wool originally from the Shetland Islands in Scotland had to be replaced by force of the blockade of imports during the Second World War, by wool produced domestically. This required the firm to maintain the quality of the raw material and the manufacture of wool from the Shetland Islands, with exclusive brands from Lopo Xavier: Céltica (already discontinued), Phoebus, Trianon and Elis.
These wires have become iconic of the Lopo Xavier brand, both for crossing half a century with the same labels drawn at the time they were created, but also for the incomparable quality of these wires. They are suitable for knitting work in jaquard as well as for the production of garments and accessories in tricot or crochet and embroidery. Its complete color palette invites harmonious and colorful works.
