The centenary Athanásio Pastry is a space that serves an excellent selection of traditional and conventual pastry from Terceira Island.

Shop History

The history of Athanásio Pastry dates back to the end of the 19th century, with Matezinho’s Coffee Store. The space, owned by Mateus José da Rosa Júnior, had two entrances, one in Rua da Sé and one in Rua da Esperança. Matezinho’s Coffee Store made a name for itself: Besides Angra´s society, which elected it as a meeting place, the space was also one of the main meeting points for artists who came on tour, from Spain or Lisbon, to Terceira.
Also the Tauromachy aficionados had the habit to attend the place. In the basement of the second house in the same location, next to Matezinho’s Coffee Shop, Francisco Ávila de Vasconcelos opened another coffee shop. After his death it passed on to his son, Atanásio Ávila de Vasconcelos, thus the name Athanásio Pastry.
The store was later owned by José Gaspar de Lima, and it is now at the care of Maria Helena Martins. The coffee shop continues to be attended not only by locals but, nowadays, also by tourists. António Machado Pires, former Dean of the University of the Azores, describes it this
way: “Athanásio is a reference in my family. It is part of our family mythology! It was the place of conversation, of friendships gathering…also the place to have a political and social bold tongue. Simple like this: very Portuguese, very Eça de Queirós’ like – “very human after all”.
