The Emanha 1 ice cream parlor, located at Avenida de 25 de Abril, no. 62, in the parish of Buarcos e S. Julião, has been in business since 1980 as a family ice cream parlor, and continues to be run by the same family under the name Nogueiras&Sobrinho, Lda.
The history of this ice cream shop dates back to Américo Nogueira’s need to support his family, since there were so many of them and they had only arrived in Portugal in 1975 from Angola. This business idea arose from the fact that his nephews sold ice cream on the beaches of Figueira da Foz during the bathing season and he thought it would be a good investment to have kiosks on Avenida de 25 de Abril selling soft serve ice cream.

Shop History

In 1980, Américo Nogueira opened Figueira da Foz’s only year-round ice cream parlor, where artisanal ice creams were produced and sold, creating new habits among the public. These habits were not only changed by the fact that they were soft serve ice creams, but also by the possibility of eating them in winter.Américo Nogueira, who initially didn’t know how to make ice cream, received training at Simil and later perfected this art in Italy.Starting with a recipe in 1980, Américo improved and created new ice cream flavors over the years.
The establishment’s name, Emanha, is a tribute to the town of Emanha, in Huambo, Angola, where Américo Nogueira is from.
Today, with more than 100 flavors of ice cream created, Emanha continues to be a brand of local identity and a national reference, with numerous awards. In 2018, it was chosen by readers of the British newspaper The Guardian as one of the 20 best ice cream shops in Europe. It received the Innovation in the Dairy Sector Award in 2022, for its kefir ice cream with seaweed, and in 2023 it received the Portugal Prestige Awards. From 2019 to 2022, it won the Best Artisanal Ice Cream Award at European level.
