Viana Mar was founded in 1965. It is the first restaurant in the city also aimed at tourism, regularly receiving international groups visiting the Alto Minho region.

Shop History

At the beginning of the 1980s, Viana Mar went through a process of rehabilitation and modernization that culminated in the reopening in 1983. Aurora do Lima reported in its edition of October 26, 1983 that “the new Viana-Mar honors the city”, highlighting the invitation from owner António Cunha to visit the restaurant’s modern facilities. Viana News. in the October 27, 1983 edition, it was reported that “Viana Mar, a functional house with modern lines, has just reopened its doors to the public”, also highlighting that the facilities managed by António Cunha are “the best in the city and in the region from a tourist point of view”.
In 2019, under the direction of Valdemar Cunha, son of the founder, the space underwent a new phase of remodeling and expansion, now featuring a new and spacious room, maintaining in its decoration the connection between the city and the sea. Viana do Castelo’s connection to the sailboat Santa Maria Manuela, built in Lisbon on the initiative of Vasco Albuquerque d’Orey, shipowner of the Viana Fishing Company, who named it after his wife, Maria Manuela de Sampaio d’Orey.
