The Shop

Centenary establishment, inaugurated in 1890, remaining in the same location and activity to this day, carrying with it the history , architectural, and identity references of the population of Peniche. This establishment is one of the oldest commercial spaces in the municipality.

Shop History

1890 – Foundation of Farmácia Proença by Filipe Proença.
The façade of the original building was restructured in the 1930s in the Art Nouveau style, with the application of monochromatic green tiles and the addition of a geometric-patterned upper frieze. A highlight is the marble commemorative panel on the exterior, referencing the opening date of the pharmacy.
This property remained in the Proença family for approximately a century. Originally, the pharmacy was located on the ground floor, and the family’s living area was on the upper floor (now the offices and orthopedics section), with a terrace above.
The collection includes a wide range of objects related to the practice of this profession and used by apothecaries and pharmacists in the manufacturing and storage of medicines (such as mortars, apothecary jars, glass pharmacy bottles, scales), as well as a set of more recent pharmaceuticals from the last decades of the 20th century. It also holds a collection of literary and documentary works focused on this specialty, with editions dating back to 1874.
