The Shop
In April 2023, Tuna Comercial Torreense celebrated one hundred and nineteen years of existence and since the 1930s it has maintained its facilities to this day without structural changes and with the same design as the Ballroom, Social Room and other facilities. The Ballroom was built from scratch for this purpose and is a rare testimony to the configuration and functionalities of a typical Ballroom from the second quarter of the 20th century.
Shop History
The association was founded by members who left the Grêmio Artístico e Comercial due to disagreements regarding the functions to be performed by the association. The Association’s main promoters are figures linked to the Republic. Initially the activity was concentrated around a Tuna whose musicians were mainly employed in commerce. The first headquarters was opened in 1906 on Rua Dias Neiva with the debut of the banner.
With this headquarters, he promoted other activities such as the organization of dances and dramatic-musical sessions, as well as the establishment of a reading office.
In 1910 the headquarters moved to the 1st floor of Rua de São Pedro, today Rua Cândido dos Reis, where the headquarters is still located.
In 1929 it was decided to build a new ballroom at the rear of the facilities, work on which took place in the 1930s and which would complete the built space as it stands today. A hall designed for this recreational function – a work that was “architecturally bold and innovative for the time”.
Subsequent years followed the same pattern of activity, with emphasis on the grandiose carnival balls that reached their peak in the sixties and seventies.
The Tuna facility operated from 1936 to 1944, offering a six-month Commercial Course to three students, which would be the beginnings of the future Technical and Commercial School.
Currently, it focuses on activities linked to dance and theater and other cultural events.
