Casa Varela

  • Facade of the Casa Varela Building

The Shop

Casa Varela maintains its original design from the beginning of the century. XX. It is located in a 2-story building, although construction took place in two phases, “Art Nouveau” elements were included in the facade. Initially designed to be a grocery store, it continued until the end of the Second World War, going through a phase in which the “menage article”, as it was called, was sold in parallel with grocery items. As Casa Varela is a ground-floor store, but an integral part of a historic building in the city, the architectural elements placed at the top of the building stand out – 4 artichokes inspired by the artichokes on the ceiling of the Main Altar of the Church of Our Lady of Pópulo, these elements symbolize redemption, which is why they are pointed towards the sky.

Shop History

Casa Varela spans generations and reaches the four corners of the world. First it was the emigrants who took our articles from Canada to Australia, from Angola to Brazil. Today it is foreigners who have settled in our beautiful municipality, who seek us out to decorate their homes. Not always called Casa Varela, this designation comes from the shares of the heirs of Aldeberto Fernandes Tavares, in the early 1970s. Before it was known as Loja do Senhor. Tavares or, through Loja do Mouco. Casa Varela is a ritual, as people return, generations return, families return. In the early years they came back because it was a grocery store with quality products. Mr. Tavares would directly buy wine from Companhia Velha in Porto, or olive oil from Beira Alta, or even coffee from the Grémio dos Retalhistas do Café! The war came, the restrictions came. The ration tickets, which are still kept, the products, such as sugar or olive oil, that were hidden in the well or in the false walls. In the mid-1950s, sales began to consist entirely of “menage articles”, maintaining, however, the grocery furniture, which, even today, is a highlight at Casa Varela, due to the good state of conservation that the various restorations, carried out throughout of the century, give it.

Products and Services

The products stand out for their quality, an example of which is that emigrants did not return to France without buying molds from Casa Varela to make the famous pastel de nata, nor did they return to Canada without taking cabbage cutting machines to make our own broth. green. In the West there is no home that does not have household goods purchased at Casa Varela.
