The Shop

The now century-old restaurant "Cabaças" is believed to have started in 1905 as a food and wine establishment named “Martins,” marked by the image of a gourd (cabaça), hence the restaurant’s name. It was owned at the time by José Maria Martins de Brito. The applicant and current owner presented documents registering the “Cabaças” trademark in favor of José Maria Martins de Brito, considered the earliest official record featuring the printed brand name “CABAÇAS”.

Shop History

Located in the famed Bairro Alto, the Cabaças Restaurant is known as a small, often crowded venue with queues at the door. Described as a “tasca” (traditional Portuguese tavern), it is known for its relaxed and informal atmosphere, ideal for gatherings of friends before a night out on Fridays and Saturdays. The menu is based on traditional Portuguese cuisine from the Trás-os-Montes, Minho, and Alentejo regions. Its specialties include Octopus Rice, Pepper Steak, Grilled Rump Cap on a Stone, and Steak on a Stone – the latter being widely promoted and considered “one of the best budget meals,” capable of creating customer loyalty.
