The Shop
Inaugurated in July 1953, Café Ceuta is one of the most iconic spaces in downtown Porto. Located at Rua de Ceuta, it occupies a building designed by architect Carlos Neves, built by José Ferreira dos Santos and decorated by António Coelho de Figueiredo. Its identity remains linked to the elegance of the 50s: artificial stone flooring, walls clad in Brecha da Arrábida – a unique ornamental stone in the region – and three large stained glass windows depicting the departure of Portuguese troops for the conquest of Ceuta in 1415.
Shop History
Over the decades, Ceuta has been a meeting place for politicians, artists and intellectuals, hosting gatherings that have marked the city’s cultural life. The basement still has pool tables, a recollection of the times when it was also used as a games room.
Today, while preserving the cafeteria service, Café Ceuta focuses on catering, with contemporary cuisine dishes and proposals ranging from cod and Ceuta steak to hand-smoked salmon and Asian-inspired options. It also keeps the cultural side alive with fado nights, dancing, book launches and other events.
It was the setting for the TV series Mulheres de Abril (2014), the film Porto (2016) by Gabe Klinger, the interview with Elisa Ferreira in Primeira Pessoa (2022) and the music video ‘Metade’ by Fernando Daniel (2023).
