The Shop

The Cafezeira is located in Rua de Costa Cabral, no. 52, in a building from the mid-19th century. The establishment, originally called "O Chinez", was founded in 1939 by João Couto, and passed on, in 1989, to Joaquim Américo Silva Santos Dias. After his death it was his wife, Maria da Conceição Soares Campos Dias, who took over the business, currently relying on the support of her daughter in the management of the establishment. Coffee continues to be the main product, in batches of pure raw or roasted beans, from Angola, Brazil, Timor, Colombia and Honduras, which are grounded on the spot and with which mixtures with barley and chicory are also prepared.

Shop History

Cafezeira also sells a variety of teas (white, green, black, roasted and jasmine, among others) from Ceylon and the Azores, cocoa and chocolate. The offer is complemented by the sale of a wide variety of dried and dehydrated fruits, seeds, pulses, spices, herbs of certified origin for infusions and honey. The products are sold loose and with environmental awareness, which means the customers can bring their own containers. They can be found in drawers in grocery cupboards, among old coffee mills. The decoration is marked by the panels that preserve the paintings on glass with the name of the original establishment – O Chinez – and two figures of an exotic and oriental nature, one Japanese female and the other male of an African Indian. In the shop you can also see a painting of an exotic landscape from the 1940s.
