The Shop
Tilheiro Funeral Home is one of the oldest in the region, having been founded around 1920.
Shop History
Founded by José da Costa Tilheiro and his wife, the great-grandparents of the current manager, Pedro Tilheiro, who carries on a business that has always remained in the family.
José Tilheiro was a native of Mujães and worked as a carpenter until he married a Spanish woman who knew how to make candles and challenged him to start a candle-making business. It was in this context that this century-old company began its operations with the manufacture of candles and wax products. His son Paulo Tilheiro, who had worked with a coffin maker, would come to assist in the business and would be responsible for its expansion into funeral services and, later—with the involvement of Manuel and António Tilheiro (the founder’s grandsons)—into the construction of artificial floats and the rental of costumes for participants in religious processions.
