The Solar dos Kapängas Association was founded in 1958, being the only “república“ in the Santo António dos Olivais parish, the furthest from Campus 1 of the University of Coimbra. Therefore, the relationship between neighbours are strengthened day-to-day in the neighbourhood, creating a sense of belonging and establishing roots.
The Solar dos Kapängas does not differentiate students according to their origin institution, if they come from the Coimbra University or from the polytechnic institutions. As a matter of fact, before the revolution on April 25th 1974, it was common to accommodate High School students attending the final years.
Since the beginning of its history, the Solar dos Kapängas Association differs from the others due to its participation in the political life of Coimbra, promoting and supporting several kinds of activities linked to the University and to the city’s broaden social questions. The final objective of this political performance is to disseminate principles and values related to ethical coexistence and social justice, against any kind of discrimination and exclusion.

Products and Services

True replacement communities, alternative households from those left in hometown, the Repúblicas (communal houses for students) are more than just student or university residences, representing the traditional academic life of Coimbra, with all that this entails, from the bohemian life to the ideological aspects.
