Basílio Simões & Irmaõs, Lda. is a grocery store, both unique and traditional. Little has
changed in its appearance since the date of it’s foundation, in 1860, by António Pedro
Simões.

Shop History

Located in Rua Direita is the most famous store in Angra do Heroísmo, a century-old
grocery store that has become a mandatory stop. Visiting or buying at Basílio Simões
& Irmãos, Lda. is like travelling back in time.

Little has changed since António Pedro Simões created the company. The building,
framed in the city draft, keeps its materials faithful to the original.

In the beginning, one of the major items sold in the store was salt, essentially for food
preservation purposes, but also other basic products, such as flour, rice or wine,
stored in barrels and sold by the liter to customers. In this house a lot is still sold to
measure. Purchases are made in bulk, so much so that we see flours, almonds and
other food items stored, so that they can then be weighed on the scale and sold.
Spices have always been commercialized a lot, because they are an essential
component in the Azorean gastronomic culture.

Establishment with its wide shutters, wooden shelves up to the ceiling, filling almost all
the walls, garnished with everything imaginable. Even before crossing the wide-open wooden doors, the unmistakable and intense smell of spices that catches the attention
of all who pass by the street is very noticeable.

The history of this house was passed down from generation to generation, as well as
the business itself. Since António Pedro Simões, it’s founder, a man with enormous
vision and culture, six generations have passed, always keeping the business in the
family.
