Bordal began in 1962 and still has features from that time period.
The building where the store is sited is a modern one from the mid 1940 with decorative historicist elements. This particular construction is almost in pristine condition: the shop’s entrance still has the original pavement, the 50s staircases, red coloured screed, the handrail and other vintage elements.
With approximately 56 years, Bordal has collected a lot of assets through the acquisition of materials and equipment from old embroidery houses who did not make it through the economic crisis of this sector. In 2013, the company created the Historical Madeira Embroidery Guide. The document portrays the 150 year long traditional process involved in the artisanal production of the regional embroidery. In its facilities, the main machinery of the industry, 60 000 embroidery designs, old employee records and other relevant artefacts are show roomed. It is regarded as a living museum for the embroidery industry in Madeira.
Bordal is, therefore, committed to make Madeira Embroidery a more prestigious activity (the sector is already worldwidely known and praised), having 400 embroiderers working from home and producing designs that hope to explore the touristic potential of the region in the process of dissemination of this traditional practice all over the world.
