Café Âncora d’Ouro – O Piolho, is a reputed coffee meeting place for students of the University of Porto. He opened on June 26, 1909, having already completed his centenary. It belongs to the group of the oldest cafes of Porto, and has been the scene of many political meetings and heated debates. It continues to be a crossing point and a mandatory stop on the night of Porto.

Shop History

The Café Ancora D’Ouro, better known simply as “Piolho” is a reputed café which many students and teachers of the Academia do Porto frequent.
In reality, nobody knows the reason for such a designation, but at least two theories exist: the first has to do with a very small space in which a high number of students use to congregate; the second which is frequently reported, tells of how people from the Mercado do Anjo would flock to there in the morning to have their coffee with milk. This more humble story has been nicknamed by the students since then “piolheira”.
This establishment was the first to install electricity, television and the first “Cimbali” coffee machine, giving origin to the characteristic “Café Cimbalino” of Porto.
