The Shop
Café Oásis is in the heart of Coimbra’s Historic Center, near the National Monument – the Sé Velha Church. It is one of the oldest establishments in Coimbra’s Alta district.
Shop History
Established in 1952, Café Oásis has remained in operation to this day.
Housed in a distinctive corner building with panoramic views of the Sé Velha Church, the café is a unique landmark in Coimbra’s Alta district. It has preserved its charm as a neighbourhood café, offering a welcoming and familiar atmosphere. Locals and students frequent the space daily to socialize, chat, and catch up on the local news, while visitors enjoy the terrace, relaxing and taking in the historic views.
Over the decades, Café Oásis has played a significant role in Coimbra’s cultural and political history. It became a hub for the student movement during the Academic Crises of 1962 and 1969. During these turbulent periods, students gathered here late into the night, particularly in the ‘catacombs’ (basement), where they played cards, held discussions, and organized political meetings in defiance of António Salazar’s regime.
Products and Services
Café Oásis offers a range of café and restaurant services, continuing its tradition of welcoming patrons with high-quality offerings and a unique sense of place.
