The Shop
The Sical Café is frequented by different groups of people who come to have coffee and socialize, ranging from art students to tourists often accompanied by tour guides, interested in seeing the ceramic panels by Júlio Resende and the painting "Porto Ribeirinho" by António Bessa.
Shop History
Born from the vision of one man, Vicente Ferreira Peres, "a man who didn’t like to drink coffee alone," the Sociedade Importadora de Café (SICAL) was founded in Porto in 1947. Retail sales and the distribution of coffee to grocery stores began the following year, in Praça D.ª Filipa de Lencastre. Coffee by the cup started being served by what would later become one of the country’s most well-known and iconic brands in 1963.
The Café holds a valuable artistic heritage – the ceramic panels by Júlio Resende, depicting the coffee cycle. This artwork was first displayed during the opening of the space to the public in 1963.
Since 2016, the Café has been owned by brothers Carlos and José Fernandes and exclusively offers its customers the coffee brand created by Vicente Ferreira Peres in the same location.
