The Shop

Casa Bernardino is perhaps the oldest shop in Mafra Municipality . It is a convenience store where you can find a little bit of everything, from crockery and medicines to hardware, always thinking about adapting to market challenges. While maintaining the memory (of its 133 years) without losing its charisma, we renew our offerings and open space for traditional Portuguese products and the work of local and national artists.

Shop History

Founded in 1893 by João Bernardino e Silva, on the old Rua do Correio, Ericeira, for the sale of "Crockery, Medicines and Hardware" – an inscription that still remains on the sign today, as a living memory of its time.

For over thirteen decades, the establishment has dedicated itself to the sale of a wide variety of products, from crockery, hardware and trinkets to the loose sale of groceries, also being an authentic artisanal laboratory for the production of drugstore, perfumery, cleaning and hygiene products.
The family management of the store spanned several generations: first taken over by Virgínia Oliveira, in 1920, widow of the founder, she was later succeeded by her son, Henrique Bernardino e Silva, in 1927. Later, in 1967, João Dias Campos, Henrique Bernardino’s adopted son, continued the Casa Bernardino.

Over time, the new generations knew how to adapt without breaking the thread of memory: they renewed the offer, opened space for traditional Portuguese products and the work of local artists, but kept the original spirit intact. Today, under the direction of Maria Manuela Campos, the house continues to affirm this heritage. The sign reads the same as always: "Ceramics, Drugs and Hardware", and those who enter find more than objects — they find a story.
