Shop History

In 1936, José Rodrigues de Carvalho, founded the Casa Marinheiro in rua 5 de outubro (currently rua de Santo António), near the Mother Church, and since then it has been one of the main fashion points in Vila Nova de Famalicão. Initially frequented by women of Famalicão’s high society, it acquired over time the status of quality and excellence.
The name "Casa Marinheiro” comes from the profession of José Rodrigues de Carvalho’s father, who at the time was a seaman and who lived in Casa do Poído, in the town with the same name.
Among several memorable moments of this establishment, there is a violent fire that ravaged the Rua de Santo António, in 1951, which almost destroyed the shop. Only thanks to the commitment and dedication of its owners was it possible to restore the building, keeping the practically original features, reopening the doors in early 1952.
Currently, the shop remains in the family, which continues to serve well
the best fabrics to customers.
