The Shop

What differentiates Casa Rádio from all other bookshops is that here, in addition to textbooks, university books and stationery, collectors and book lovers can find editions from the 19th century to the present day, both national and international. The collection of magazines from the 1970s – fashion, comedy, cordel and erotic magazines, such as, for example, A Gaiola Aberta, a humorous magazine directed by José Vilhena – should also be mentioned.
In addition, it has luxury desk articles, nibs and a vast category of materials and accessories that the customer can always find very personalized and according to his preference.

Shop History

On April 1, 1928, Casa Rádio opened its doors, with stationery, bookshop, tobacco and radio (TSF) articles, through the company "Neves & Sousa, Lda.", whose founding partners were António da Costa Neves and Raul Bruno de Sousa.
The name Casa Rádio comes from the activity of selling radio equipment in this establishment and from the passion of one of the partners, Mr. Costa, for TSF accessories, which were in full fashion and evolution at the time and also because in the shop window there was a big radio receiver with the sound directed to the street and it was common for people to gather near it to listen to the now popular reports of the main football matches, concerts and the main news, being these events advertised in newspapers of the time.
In Figueira da Foz it is impossible to have never heard the name of Ângelo Tavares, who started as an employee of this establishment and ended up being one of the best known figures of this house.
Books, magazines or newspapers that were not accepted by the censorship of the regime, were announced by him as he passed by his regular customers, warning them of the arrival of a new consignment, asking: "It’s out. Would you like some?".
Nowadays, Casa Rádio is managed by Cremilda da Conceição Cação and Américo Claro Cação, who continue to honour the name of Casa Rádio, not forgetting the memories of the shop, and continuing to make it a toponimental reference of the city.
