Shop History

Opened in 1892 by Joaquim Ferreira de Moura for his wife Luísa, a confectioner who sold sweets at local fairs. The business soon thrived and diversified.
Their son Guilherme, aged 14, was sent to learn the trade in Oporto, and they hired a spanish pastry chef who brought the recipe for puff pastry and the famous Jesuítas. According to Father Carvalho Correia, the chef was from Bilbao, where similar Jesuítas are still made today.
In the 2nd generation, Guilherme Ferreira de Moura and his wife, Rita Moreira, carried on the tradition, even after the chef left. Guilherme died with 42 years old, but his wife and children kept the quality alive.
His eldest daughter Mª Antonieta (known as “Menina Toninha”), only 18 at the time, took over and devoted her life to the business. She was key to the fame of the Jesuítas in Santo Tirso and across northern Portugal.
She passed away in 2011 at age 89, and the 4th generation now manages the business with the same dedication.
The secret to our success lies in the quality of our ingredients and the pride of preserving and continuing a unique family legacy.
