Nestled in a narrow alley surrounded by old buildings, the Diligência Bar stands out as a place where guests can enjoy live music or sing "until their voice gives out," with a special focus on Coimbra and Lisbon Fado, as well as soulful ballads.
The space, with its casual atmosphere, blends socializing, snacks (tapas), drinks, and live music, while also offering customers the opportunity to showcase their talents, making each night different and one-of-a-kind.

Shop History

In 1972, at number 30 Rua Nova da Baixa in Coimbra, the Diligência establishment opened its doors. This cultural hub was a space for gatherings, music, and the promotion of artistic expression, defined by its simplicity, informality, and lively atmosphere. Notably, it was the first venue in the area to host live Fado performances.
Over the years, it became a hub for spontaneous meetings, particularly during the period before and after the April 25, 1974, Revolution, serving as a space for creativity and freedom. Under the dictatorship that preceded the revolution, the venue was known for hosting performances of songs that were otherwise censored by the regime.
Inside, the establishment’s walls have become one of its most iconic features, adorned with hundreds of stones sourced from the Ançã quarries, lending the venue its unique and characteristic decor.
Today, Bar Diligência remains a vibrant meeting point for exhibitions, social gatherings, and cultural exchange. It draws residents, tourists, and students from diverse social backgrounds, fostering an inclusive atmosphere. It is also the only venue in the area that stays open during the city’s late hours, serving as a hub of positive energy and experiences. This has helped improve the area’s reputation and contributed to reducing crime in the narrow streets nearby.
