The Shop

Doçaria Cruz de Pedra – Sàbiá is a 74-year-old commercial establishment that has been recognised several times by the national press as well as by various organisations, including the ‘Great Taste’ award, the ‘Boa Cama Boa Mesa Guide’ and the Braga City Council, as well as being nominated for the AHRESP awards.

Shop History

Founded in 1922 by master confectioner António Xavier Martins, Doçaria Cruz de Pedra has now passed through four generations of the same family.
The story goes that in 1922, Master Pastry Chef António Xavier Martins established his sweets and wine business in Rua da Cruz de Pedra.
The sweets quickly gained prominence and their fame spread across the tables of the people of Braga and the pilgrimages of the Minho region.
As circumstances would have it, the business was taken over by the Grand Master’s daughter, Maria Pereira Martins and her husband, António Joaquim Machado de Almeida, who was also a pastry chef by profession. The work of an entire family came to fruition and Doçaria Cruz de Pedra was already a landmark in the history of traditional sweets from Braga.
Today, occupying the premises of another iconic pastry shop – Sàbiá – Manuel Almeida is in charge of a recognised artisan production unit. Inspired by the work and dedication of his ancestors, he has taken on the mission of perpetuating a legacy full of knowledge and tradition, taking the name of Doçaria Cruz de Pedra and the city of Braga further.
The shop is located on the ground floor of a building built in the mid-1950s, which retains its original layout. The interior of the shop was completely renovated in 2010 and now has a contemporary feel with classic references. The space has been designed to enhance the display of products and to accommodate personalised customer service.

Products and Services

The common identity of Doçaria Cruz de Pedra’s main products is traditional Portuguese sweets and the artisanal method with which they are made.
We are referring in particular to the Abade de Priscos pudding, pastel dos remédios, fidalguinhos, toucinho do céu, handmade biscuits and sponge cake.
