The Shop

The origin of the business dates back to 1969, when António Oliveira opened a small workshop in Rua das Taipas. After the founder’s death, in 2007, the succession of the family business was ensured by his wife and three children, José António, José João and Maria Augusta. It is in the small workshop next to the commercial space that the brothers carry out all the craftwork that characterises the activity of the firm, namely in the art of bookbinding, restoration and gilding, and also engraving.

Shop History

They keep, duly safeguarded, the estate in quantity and quality, which, in its great majority, is still in use. It is mainly constituted by small and medium-sized equipment, such as presses and shears or guillotines, standing out due to its antiquity a press from the Casa Von Hafe, Porto, probably from the 1930’s, a press from the Fábrica de Máquinas Industriais Pinto Basto & Leite and an old shear, perhaps from the 1930’s or 1940’s. To these we can add a Singer sewing machine from the early 1970’s and also still used to sew the sheets of books and notebooks to their corresponding spines. In addition to this equipment, small wooden workshop cupboards are also safeguarded and in use, where tools, metal types and countless irons for marking and gilding the book spines are kept. It is the quality of the manual execution of their work that attracts the loyalty of their customers, mainly booksellers, second-hand booksellers, printing companies, universities, but also private individuals.
