The Shop

The Farmácia Portuguesa (Portuguese Pharmacy) is one of the most emblematic establishments of the city of Funchal, largely because it is situated in a listed building in the Historic Centre of Sé.

Shop History

The pharmacy was founded in 1917 by António Andrade Dionísio better known as “Andrade”. It stayed in the family until April 2019, , when it was sold by the founder’s great-grandchildren.
Housed in a listed building, the Framácia Portuguesa was presumably rebuilt in 1924. From an architectural point of view, it is a historic building whose façade displays the characteristic elements of the eclecticism of the first quarter of the 20th century, with an exuberant profusion of decorative elements.
The interior of the pharmacy was remodelled in 2021, in accordance with the new European regulations of accessibility. The most noticeable intervention was the recovery of the original colour of the centenary furniture, returning it to white.

Products and Services

Currently, Farmácia Portuguesa offers a fast and personalised customer service, offering a wide range of health products and services. It continues to be a well-known pharmacy, both by Madeirans and emigrants, as well as by many tourists who visit the establishment daily, some of whom maintain a close relationship with the employees.
