The “Fernandes Oculista” store is located at 41 Rua Visconde da Luz, right in the heart of “Baixa” of Coimbra, and began its activity in August 1963.

Shop History

“Fernandes Oculista” began its activity more than 60 years ago and was the fourth optician’s shop in the city at the time.
Today, it is probably the oldest optical store in Coimbra, remaining a family business that has now been passed down through three generations.
On the façade of the building where the shop is located, it is still possible to see the original neon signage designed by Neolux, and its shop window features the original design created by architect Manuel Lopes Montalvão in July 1963. On the first floor is the establishment’s workshop, which is a true time capsule, with various antique optical materials such as lenses, eyeglass frames, advertisements, optical pieces, machines, and optometry workshop tools. Throughout its history, any challenges faced have always been overcome through its commercial approach, maintaining a close relationship with customers and ensuring they have access to the best and most up-to-date visual solutions. It is a family business for families!
