The Shop

The Portuguese Social Prophylaxis League was very important and pioneering over the years, having played a very relevant role in social intervention in the city. The histories of important public health campaigns are on display at the Health Museum, highlighting the campaigns: the prohibition of walking barefoot in the city of Porto; of spitting on the floor; the importance of creating sewage systems, among many others.

Shop History

Originating in 1924, the Portuguese Social Prophylaxis League was founded by three doctors: António Emílio de Magalhães, Cândido Henrique Gil da Costa and Veiga Pires. With the objective of social intervention, according to the scientific principles of medicine, this initiative became a pioneer in Portugal, having preceded the creation of the network of social hygiene dispensaries, created by Ricardo Jorge. Without its own headquarters, the League began by acting from the offices of its founders, with its concerns centred on the various public health problems: syphilis, tuberculosis, tetanus, leprosy, alcoholism, child prostitution, homelessness, among others. In June 1928 they moved to the second floor of 108, Rua de Santa Catarina. After Veiga Pires left, the remaining founders dedicated themselves more and more to the League and its work, and their dedication was recognised by the municipality, which attributed their names to two streets in Porto. There were various campaigns, always with an educational focus, which followed the concerns of each period. Currently, the focus is on the educational aspect and home support, always in the area of health, continuing to exercise its activity in favour of public health, especially in the areas most in need. The space is preserved from the time of construction, the floor, the doors, the glass, as well as the organisation of the space.
