Shop History

Livraria Moreira da Costa, initially installed in the former Travessa da Fábrica, 48 was founded by José Moreira da Costa in 1902. Former salesman, edited books, published numerous catalogs and promoted some auctions. At the time of his death, the establishment belonged to his daughter Elisa Duarte da Costa Ferreira Dias, passing since then to bear the designation of Moreira da Costa (daughter), still visible today in the shop windows. It was with this lady, a great connoisseur of books, that the bookstore, at this time, was the center of tertulias of different men of letters and lovers of books. Distinguished camillianistas attended the establishment, having at a certain point, in 1952, the booklet promoted by a facsimile edition of the very rare work of Camilo Castelo Branco – The Infanta Capelista, of very low circulation and destined mainly to that circle of collectors. Today, this edition is a rarity dear to camillianists. The bookstore was inherited by her only daughter Maria Elisa Ferreira Dias Gonçalves, who remained at the head of the establishment until shortly before her death. In 1987, still in the life of the owner, a company was founded,. In 1999, Ângelo Miguel Gonçalves Carneiro, son of the current owners, buys the share of Rui Gonçalves, thus becoming co-owner in the fifth generation of the founder’s family.
