The Shop

The Manuel Natário confectionery was founded around 1935 by Custódia Barreiros Natário, who had recently become a widow and was forced to leave Pastelaria Brazil (which she operated at 115 Rua Manuel Espregueira) to establish herself in a more small. It was here that he created Confeitaria e Pastelaria Mimosa, where he worked with his children and which would go on to consolidate itself as a reference in Viana do Castelo.

Shop History

The business remains, to this day, in the family. It was promoted by Manuel Natário (who gives the commercial space its name), one of his sons, and after his death by Maria Fernanda Natário (wife of Manuel Natário), who has the support of long-time employees and who year after year become confused with the history of this place.
Manuel Natário is an important name in the pastry industry and in Vivian society, famous for his Berlin balls. He captivated many with his cordiality, vision and intelligence, inspiring, for example, the character “Capitão Natário” in the novel “Tocaia Grande” by Jorge Armado, a Brazilian writer with whom he maintained a great friendship.
Talking about Confeitaria Manuel Natário is necessarily talking about the best Berlin balls in the world. They are described as fluffy, creamy and with a unique flavor. The recipe remains the secret of the gods, but its caretaker (Maria Fernanda Natário) guarantees that the main ingredients that make them so tasty and appreciated are just two: the love and care they put into each of the Berlin Balls.
And there are a lot of balls… prepared twice a day, to leave at 11:30 am and 4:30 pm. The queues outside are constant and production is not always sufficient to satisfy all orders, despite more than a thousand units being produced per day!
Going to Viana and not eating a Bola do Natário is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope!
