The Shop

The history of Mister Man reflects the transformation of the city of Lisbon itself. Located at Rua de São Nicolau, no. 1, in the heart of the Baixa district, the shop has been in continuous operation for over five decades, maintaining its relevance within traditional retail.
Its origins date back to 1972, when it operated under the name Armazéns do Norte, specialising in the sale of fabrics and the tailoring of bespoke suits. Following the post–25 April period, the establishment was acquired by an Angolan businessman who, inspired by a chain of men’s clothing stores in South Africa, introduced the Mister Man concept and name to Lisbon.
In 1985, Manuel de Oliveira assumed the management of the shop through a transfer agreement, ensuring the continuity and consolidation of its presence in the market.

Shop History

The early years under the new name were marked by some controversy, following the disclosure that the premises had previously been associated with the operations of Dona Branca, known as the “People’s Banker”. Once it was clarified that the new management had no connection to these activities, Mister Man was able to establish a stable and sustainable trajectory, consolidating its position as a reference in Lisbon’s traditional men’s fashion retail sector.
