Shop History

This establishment is considered a reference point by the student community concerning the student bohemian kind of living. It is very usual that the students attending the place enjoy listening to the stories told out in the bar ‘Moelas’ by Mr. Américo, the owner, who spent a lifetime hosting them at the door and telling stories about Coimbra living and atmosphere.
Nowadays, despite retired, Mr. Américo still turns up in the bar, mainly when there are ancient students meetings. Every year, the establishment makes ‘protocols’ with the several associations in the city, choirs, tertulia and others, in order to maintain its activity and dynamic in the student life.
It should be referred that the musical assets of the ancient ‘Tuna da Arca-Etac’ (academic choir) was consigned to the bar "O Moelas" and every year the ancient students integrating the choir have a meeting in the establishment. For this reason, and for other material and immaterial assets that the establishment acquired along the time, since 1974, the Veteran Council of the University of Coimbra awarded it, through the DECRETUS from the 17th December 2019, with the statute of Academic Interest Tavern.

Products and Services

The bar has many cocktails created by themselves. Many of them are dedicated to the historical area where it is located, other created thinking on the Academy and the University, as the shots inspired in Degrees or festivities. There can also be found other beverages, as ‘Xicos’ or ‘Beneno’ and others related to the bar itself, as ‘Laranja Mecânica’, fruits ‘Caipiróska’ or ‘Sangria com cheirinho’. We must also take account of the famous "Moelas", the most demanded delicacy at any time.
