Founded in the distant year 1809 by João Custódio da Silva, it is the oldest goldsmith shop in continuous activity in Portugal and the longest-running commercial establishment in Viana do Castelo. With more than two centuries, living in its seventh generation, it is honored to have as its motto “The Tradition of Serving with Dignity”.

Shop History

After the death of its founder, on February 27, 1873, he was succeeded by his brother Caetano Luís da Silva, who continued to maintain the traditional honesty that the commercial establishment achieved among its vast clientele. Upon the death of Caetano Luís da Silva, in 1894, ownership of the house passed to the employee José António Martins, who maintained it until 1905. That year, former employee José Maria do Carmo Pereira de Carvalho took possession of the firm, who gave it the name Ourivesaria Carvalho and ensured its maintenance until 1935. After this date, the goldsmith’s shop passed into the hands of former employee Luís Augusto da Costa, who, maintaining the title, gave the establishment notable development, modernizing the facilities in order to keep up with urban progress. of the city. From 1941 onwards, the commercial establishment, maintaining the name Ourivesaria Carvalho, came into the possession and management of goldsmith technician Antonino Campos Alves Leão, also a former employee and son-in-law of Luís Augusto da Costa.
Until a few decades ago, this goldsmith’s shop maintained its own workshop to make beautiful and artistic pieces of goldsmithing that were then sold in the establishment itself.
