Shop History

With the death of Adão Gomes da Costa, author of the recipe for the famous sponge cake, Carlos Gomes da Costa, along with his wife, opened an establishment where they worked together with their children. In 1978, they started working with Mrs. Maria Agostinha Alves da Costa as the driving force behind the business. The working method remains faithful to the one initiated by his grandfather, about 90 years ago. It is important to remember Mr. Carlos Gomes da Costa, deceased in
2007, did everything to ensure that the business would reached to the 3rd generation of sponge cake manufacturers, is currently still in the hands of Mª Agostinha Alves da Costa and her husband, Benjamim, as well as José Gomes. It is important to pass on this legacy to the 4th generation, so that the memory of the famous sponge cake of Joane is kept alive and continues to delight the lovers of this characteristic sweet.
