The Shop

The A Regaleira restaurant was born in Rua do Bonjardim, 85-87, in 1934. The current owners of the space report that their grandfather – António Augusto Gomes Gonçalves Passos, bought the restaurant in the following years, thus remaining in the same family until today: his brother José Gomes Gonçalves Passos, his father-in-law António Abrantes Jorge and his son Jorge Abrantes Passos Gonçalves also spent some time in the firm.

Shop History

Today it is his grandsons Francisco and Tiago Pais de Brito Passos Gonçalves who give continuity to this family legacy.
It was in the 1950s that Daniel David da Silva, a barman who António Passos met in a hotel in France, was invited to work in the restaurant, and a few years later he became a partner in the firm. It was behind the counter at A Regaleira that Daniel Silva, inspired by the famous French sandwich "croque monsieur", created a small sandwich, served on ‘biju’ bread (small, fresh, soft wheat bread), with roast beef and smoked meat, adding a secret hot sauce, a characteristic its creator, a renowned womaniser, attributed to French women of the time, and this was the origin of the dish called ‘Francesinha’. This delicacy is still served at A Regaleira, fully respecting the original recipe. In addition to this speciality, A Regaleira is also known for the quality of its ‘Tripas à Moda do Porto’ (a traditional dish born in the city of Porto made with several types of meat, tripe, sausages and white beans). However, in 2019, due to works of deep requalification of the building, A Regaleira closed, having reopened, at number 83 of the same street, in July 2021.
