Toca do Gato Tavern
Shop History
Toca do Gato is a centenary tavern, with a license from 1930, enabling the establishment to serve wine, from the 17th June. This kind of document was a legal requirement at that time to open the establishment. Mostly known as TOCA DO GATO due to the sculpture placed in front of the opening door, it was also named O BAIXINHO. This designation was related to one of the owner’s high height, Mr. Borges, and was in fact a nickname, which fitted in the kind of humour linked to these types of businesses.
Products and Services
Although there is a vast tradition of taverns/eating houses in Coimbra, Toca do Gato is undoubtedly an important social and gastronomic reference. In this tavern, there have always existed freshly cooked snacks and delicacies, egg and pork (the so called bifanas) sandwiches, fried codfish, ‘moelas’, ‘orelha à casa’ or small sardines (known as petinga). Nowadays, one of the most famous meals to have here are ‘Tentáculo à Casa’ (a kind of squid) and ‘Frango à Moda Antiga’ (a chicken dish).
