The Shop
Unicepe is a space of culture. It is a bookshop specialised in Portuguese poetry and romance; it has its own editions; it is a space of tertulia and of creation of a community of readers. In its internet space you can also find book and film reviews.
Shop History
It was on November 19th, 1963 that, following the academic revolt of the students of the University of Coimbra in 1962, a group of students founded the Cooperativa Livreira de Estudantes do Porto (Student Bookstore Cooperative of Porto), known as Unicepe. It was a bold act and one assumed by the Commission of Awareness, because people lived in a context of Estado Novo (Portuguese dictatorship), not very conducive to the free circulation of ideas and books. Rui Vaz Pinto, president of the board of directors of the cooperative, says that Unicepe persists because it has created a "community of affections", a space that brings together and gathers various aspects of culture, with the sale of books and records, the discussion of ideas, tertulias, performances, declamation of poetry, always with a focus on creating a community which unites people around culture.
