Shop History

José Enes Gonçalves Natário was born on January 10, 1933. He was born into the business, as his parents were owners of Pastelaria Brazil, on R. Manuel Espregueira. He was orphaned by his father at the age of 14, and it was with his mother, Custódia Barreiros Natário, who took over the business. Life’s circumstances forced them to pass on this business and establish themselves in a small space on the same street, called Confeitaria e Pastelaria Primorosa (today the Manuel Natário confectionery).
In his spare time, and equipped with a tricycle-type bicycle, he went to Cabedelo Beach and the Football Field to sell snacks (swindlers).
At the age of 22, he bought the lease for “Café Sport”, one of the oldest and most renowned cafés in the city. Soon after, “Taco” opened – a pool hall. He was also a member of the Vianense Bakery League, which he headed for a few years.
José Natário had wanted to have his own confectionery shop with his own production for several years. Thus, he acquired a space on Avenida dos Combatentes and opened Pastelaria Zé Natário (today managed by his daughter Regina Natário). At that time, Zé Natário hired a well-known pastry chef from the region and together they launched specialties, seeking to improve traditional recipes and developing other products. He also opened the Brazil bakery (named after his parents’ first bakery that opened in the 1920s) where his son, José Natário, heads the business.
