The Shop

Bijou Restaurant is located in Bairro Novo since 1912 and offers a varied menu in a simple and familiar environment. A great curiosity of the space is that it was here that the specialty "Brisas da Figueira" was created, a regional sweet, which they still sell today.
Today, we can enjoy traditional cuisine run by the whole family, in a modernised space but still with testimonies of times past, like a hundred-year-old bag coffee machine and photographs of the old Figueira da Foz.

Shop History

In 1912 António Dias Pestana, a businessman of Spanish origin who was established in Lisbon and who already owned pastry shops, opened a beer-pastry shop in Bairro Novo, on Rua Cândido dos Reis.
In 1918, José d’Oliveira Santos, a pastry chef who had spent two years in Paris perfecting the art of pastrymaking, became the new owner of Bijou.
During the Estado Novo period, Mr. Santos had to change the name of the establishment to Pastelaria Santos, since foreign words were not allowed, but in order for people to recognize the space, the owner alluded to the original name, always placing it in the advertisement of the space – Pastelaria Santos – Antiga Bijou.
In 1941, Carlos Santos Ferrão, his son-in-law, took over the space and it was in 1945 that Brisas da Figueira, which by then already existed, was registered, the recipe having been created in the Bijou.
The Bijou remained in the same family until 1973, being the new owner José Fernandes Tomás who recovered the initial name of the space – Bijou.
The Bijou was not only a pastry shop, but also a grazing house where they served traditional Portuguese meals and sold the typical Figueira da Foz biscuits. It was in the Bijou that upper-class women gathered for "good-tempered meetings", it was also here that Portuguese and Spanish locals and holidaymakers came to eat, but it also received illustrious people such as General Kaúlza de Arriaga, Freitas do Amaral and counselling judges.
