Born on May 15, 1884, Comércio de Guimaraães emerged on the newsstands of Guimarães to give voice to the dominant activity of the time. With industry still taking its first steps in the region, commercial activity dominated
the economy of Guimaraães and it was to position himself alongside this meritorious activity and the people of Guimarães that António Joaquim de Azevedo Machado founded this century-old newspaper.
With prosperous and less prosperous phases, the truth is that O Comércio de Guimarães went through two generations of the founder’s family, much of that time as a bi-weekly newspaper. In the second half of the 20th century, when technological modernization began to
dictate rules and even the organization of social
communication companies, no longer being compatible with family-type operations, this newspaper entered a survival crisis until it was suspended in December 1985.
In May 1986, at the initiative of Santiago – Sociedade de Cultura e Turismo, Ltda., which acquired the company that owned the title, the publication returned to being published fortnightly.
In 1989 it began to be published weekly and, from then until the present, it has not stopped developing, integrated into a truly professional project that became the company that supports the title – Gimapress, Lda – which has developed in many other aspects, now owning six media
outlets, namely, of the local and regional press.

Shop History

Since 2007, Guimapress Ltda. It is worth highlighting the creation of a large museum area where you can see machines from the beginning of the printing press. Guimapress Lda usually receives several study visits so that young people and adults can learn about the history of the local and regional press.
